The Life Raft Known As Jesus

By Isabelle Ekbundit

Because of social distancing, you’re probably reading this inside your house (Or you could be outside if the weather’s nice). You’ve been handed hours of free time that you have nothing to do with, and so you’re trying to fill it. Maybe you’re bingeing Netflix. Maybe you’re scrolling through Instagram. Maybe you’re cleaning your room. Maybe though, you’re filling your time with worrying. I get it. I mean, it’s hard not to with the media telling us the world is ending, the death rates, and everyone holing up in their houses. But the more we let ourselves worry, well duh, the more worried we get.

Guys, listen. Don’t. You read me right. Don’t worry. Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 Maybe you perceive this verse differently than I do, but I’m pretty sure we can at least agree that Paul’s saying not to worry, but to pray. I won’t tell you that prayer just makes things go away. I won’t tell you that you’re just instantly going to feel better. But, what I will say, is that shutting down won’t get us anywhere.

What are we focusing on right now? Is it God? Or, is it fear, loneliness, and anxiety?  I know that when times are hard, sometimes we just want to sink into it and let it swallow us for a moment – like it’s a safe place. But if we stay under for too long, we’ll start to drown. Jesus is a life raft. Hold onto him. Give him all the anxiety and sadness and pain, and know that he’ll keep us afloat. Because that’s what God does: He takes care of us. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
